his surname - which is also the demonym for the people of Ludan, the Ludanzey - and the planet name derive from the name of Ludanza, a mortal whose heroic death immediately preceded the formation of the rings around the planet; she is considered their goddess and the protector of the planet now
Aticus's family is directly descended from her, thanks to the planet already having advanced genetic technologies at the time of Ludanza's ascension
Aticus doesn't have a malicious bone in his body, but he is spoiled, entitled, and grew up with a very well-fed ego, so it may seem that he doesn't care about common people at first
being the youngest of three, he definitely comes across as the baby of the family; he's never really had to work hard for anything, and since he has such a low chance of becoming Hierarch, he generally isn't included in vital politics, so he's under the impression that everyone on the planet is pretty content (which they are, to an extent, but there are complexities)
he has a low tolerance for boredom, and though he considers himself well-educated, he doesn't actually know anything useful (except maybe sword skills, though he's trying to earn himself some real-life responsibilities as a representative of his planet and making a bit of headway with that)
despite the impression he gives, he is empathetic to people he sees directly who are struggling -- but his personal world, at present, is far away from anything like that
he's adamant that if the leader of a planet can't keep all of its citizens content, healthy, and safe, then they are bad at their job and should be replaced
... but he still considers himself and his family better than everyone, because of his bloodline; just the way it is, friend
